The History of Tin Mine Phuket

Tin Mine of Phuket.

Located : Tambol Wichit, Amphur Muang Phuket Thailand.

Originally, it was a shaft mine and some carried mine, it was held in B.E. 2460 because there was a mining concession in the nearly area. Some area was operated as a draw mine and some was an injected mine; there was operation with cooperation from their project planning. That meant that they have to ask for permission from the provincial underground resource that had ordered to change the entire draw mine and injected mine.

Regarding The Royal Anuphas Phuketkarn, who is a person who was always interested in searching for new knowledge. At the time, he knew that there was a new style of draws mine in B.E. 2470. He hoped to improve the operational style to be more prosperous than other countries. He decided to travel to observe the draw mines in Malaysia and took it back to apply for the draw mine in Thailand in B.E. 2470.

The was the first Thai who started to operate the new style of draw mine in Thailand but It still uses the diesel engine to produce the electricity directly which does not decrease the operation cost and dose not satisfy his needs. He tried to fine another way by buying a dynamo that was used with boats to try to produce the electricity instead of using a diesel engine. The result was a decrease in operation cost. Additionally, he was successful with 3 points that are as he could operate the draw mine, the method of the draw mine and using the dynamo to produce the electricity along with decreasing the operation cost.

The source of the word “Chaofah” mine was when he could operate the mine to satisfaction at that time. Field Marshal Prince Nakhon Sawan Worapinit came to Phuket and he Tambol Wichit on 9th January B.E. 2473. The electricity organization also operated to distribute the electricity for use in the mine operation instead of using the diesel engine. The price was presided over the ceremony and signed for in the name of “Mueng Chaofah” (Chaofah Mine) in memory.

Phuket Ancient Mine

The Historical legend of Phuket mining especially in Kathu community, it has continually been transferred as one part of legends of Phuket for many year. Kathu covered with natural resource, forest and minerals especially in the area of Kathu district. The tin mine was the cultural way of life for fundamental occupation in the area. The ancient mine remains could be referred to the value of the ancestor’ s wisdom which are likely to reserve for the next generations.

Nowadays, the Museum of Replica Mine is constructed in the area of ancient Tor Sung mine in which is place of the north of Nang Pan Tu Rat Hill and the west of Ket Nee Mountain Range or between Ban Koh Kaew Bang Ku and Lock Palm golf course. The museum shows the reality exhibition, which composes of two sections the outdoor provides the cavity mine, the squirting mine, the boat digging mine and Ban Nai Too; the indoor called “Ang Mor Lao Nai Hua Muang” is designed for the exhibition of tin mining and the mine workers way of life. It is expected to complete its construction in May 2007 and to show in the end of this year.

The Kathu Local Heritage Reservation Center is located in Ban Kathu School. It id the place for keeping information and collecting utilizations of mining, minerals, the models and the ancient mine figures that refer to the value way of life of Kathu residents.
