Phuket richness of natural beauty, powder beaches and emerald sea, Phuket the paradise attracting all tourists worldwide is a modern Phuket with equipped infrastructure to facilitate tourism activities. Prior to a Phuket city of tourism.
Phuket City was developed from a tin mining area. As tin has been demanded by global market, people were flooding into this city for mining industry, especially the Hokkian group either from Singapore, Penang or China. This group settled down at this city, introducing their culture, resulting in culture distinctiveness in Phuket. Among others are Chino-Portuguese architecture, local cuisines, costumes, customs, and tradition, treasured and cherished by many generations until today.
Phuket Town was settled by Chinese merchants who migrated fromm nearby Penang to set up bussinesses over a hundred years ago. The island was prosperous even then from revenues from tin mining and robber plantations. These Chinese merchants built extravagant home and offices in the Sino-Portuguese style which developed centuries ago in the active trading port of Malacca. Three hundred years ago, even Phuket had a community of Portuguese traders living on the island. They not only brought the chili peper with them, but they brought their architecture, must of which can be seen only in Phuket Town.

Phuket unique architecture, Chino-Portuguese Style or Colonial Style is combination between Chinese and Portuguese architecture. These kinds of houses were constructed in western style but the decoration inside the houses was Chinese. Originally, the Chino-Portuguese house owners were Chinese that emigrated from Penang. At the time, building such a house was expansive and sometimes materials had to be ordered from other counties, such as England and Italy, so most of the houses were occupied by traders who usually traveled to Penang, because the business relationship between Phuket and Penang was very good and the Phuket way of life and culture were similar to Penang. One manifest sample is the Sino-Portuguese Houses on Thalang (the road of culture), PhangNga and Dibuk road. There are 2 types of Chino-Portuguese houses, Aung Mor Lao and 2 story row houses. In front of every roe house, there is a connected cloister called Ngor Ka Kei.
